388 Million Christians Face Persecution: The 2026 World Watch List

The 2026 World Watch List from Open Doors estimates that more than 388 million Christians experience high levels of persecution or discrimination for their faith. Within the 50 ranked countries, more than 315 million face very high or extreme persecution.

What the report found

North Korea remained number one on the list, followed by Somalia and Yemen. Sudan rose to fourth, Syria jumped from eighteenth to sixth, and Nigeria ranked seventh. Open Doors counted 4,849 Christians killed for faith-related reasons during its October 2024–September 2025 reporting period.

That date range matters. The figures were published in 2026 but largely measure events in 2025. Good reporting preserves that distinction rather than presenting every number as an event that happened after New Year's Day.

Remember those in bonds

Persecution is not a statistic for scoring prophetic points. Hebrews tells believers to remember prisoners as though imprisoned with them. Learn their names where safety permits, support trustworthy ministries, advocate for freedom of conscience and pray for courage and mercy.

“Remember them that are in bonds, as bound with them; and them which suffer adversity, as being yourselves also in the body.”
— Hebrews 13:3 (KJV)
