Afghanistan and Pakistan at War: Another Border Becomes a Battlefield

A dangerous new conflict erupted along the Afghanistan–Pakistan border in late February. The UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan recorded at least 146 civilian casualties inside Afghanistan from the evening of February 26 through March 2: 42 killed and 104 injured, including women and children.

Conflict on top of crisis

Restrictions on movement reduced the ability of humanitarian agencies to deliver aid and made Afghan returnees from Pakistan especially vulnerable. The UN called for an immediate halt to cross-border clashes and reminded both sides of their duties under international humanitarian law.

This conflict deserves attention even when larger wars dominate Western headlines. Jesus spoke of wars and rumors of wars across nations; He also told His followers not to be terrified. Awareness should produce intercession, not panic.

Pray beyond the headlines

Pray for civilians trapped near the border, for aid workers, for wise restraint by leaders and for believers who worship under severe pressure in both countries.

“Nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom.”
— Matthew 24:7 (KJV)
