Hunger in Gaza and Sudan: Fragile Gains, Enormous Need
There is both sobering news and evidence that help works. UN agencies reported in July that expanded aid and commercial access improved food security in Gaza, where famine had been confirmed in 2025. Yet only one crossing remained open and much of the population still depended on humanitarian support.
Gaza: improvement is not recovery
The October 2025 ceasefire and increased aid helped offset famine conditions. By mid-2026, acute malnutrition measures among children had improved, but UN agencies warned that damaged water, sanitation, health and food systems left gains vulnerable to any new disruption.
This corrects a common mistake: we should not write that famine was newly confirmed in Gaza in 2026. It was confirmed in August 2025; the 2026 story is fragile improvement alongside deep, continuing need.
Sudan: a vast emergency
After three years of war, the UN described Sudan as the world's largest humanitarian and displacement crisis. Health services, food access and safe shelter remained severely constrained. In and around El Obeid, displacement had nearly doubled the population while food, water and fuel were under severe pressure.
Christ's warning about famine is not permission to treat hunger as a headline counter. Isaiah 58 joins worship to feeding the hungry. Prayer and practical mercy belong together.
