Earthquakes in Diverse Places: A Difficult August Around the Pacific
The earth shook repeatedly this summer. The USGS significant-earthquake archive lists a magnitude 6.8 Kumamoto-region earthquake on July 28, a magnitude 7.4 event in Colombia on August 10, and a magnitude 7.7 earthquake north of Ende, Indonesia, on August 14.
What the measurements mean
Magnitude measures the energy released; impact also depends on depth, construction, population and distance. The USGS assigned a red PAGER alert to the Kumamoto and Colombia events, signaling the potential for major human and economic losses, while the Indonesia event received a yellow alert.
A list of earthquakes is not, by itself, proof that earthquakes are becoming more frequent. Better instruments detect far more events than earlier generations could. Honest watchfulness reports both the event and the limits of what the data can establish.
Watchfulness should lead to service
Jesus included earthquakes among the beginning of sorrows, but He also warned against panic and deception. For Christians, the practical question is not merely whether a headline fits a pattern. It is whether we are prepared to help neighbors, support relief work and speak truth without exaggeration.
